Meet the Writer

My name is Alyssa Duross. Be it my strong determination, unwillingness to fail, or annoying persistence, I am committed to getting a job in advertising directly after college. My conviction to join this particular field stems from my love for writing. So naturally, when deciding what career path to take, I had to research different ways to write for a living. I wanted to do what I was good at and what I loved. The most obvious choice to me was writing books, but that isn’t exactly a steady job. It does not have a quick turnover rate, the pay is low in most cases, and it is a grueling process to get just one book published. After evaluating those facts, it was clear to me that I needed another option. Journalism seemed fun, but I didn’t like the idea of always having to dig for articles. I knew I needed something creative, something with longer time in between deadlines, and something reliable. Then it hit me: advertising.

Advertising is a job that demands original, inventive, and resourceful employees. The timeline for having work done is farther apart than other traditional writing modes such as newspapers, magazines, and books. Ads are not necessarily about length, but about content. Also, they depend on not only the text, but the materials they incorporate. Advertising is the perfect job for me because it is a profession wrapped around thinking outside the box, expressing yourself, and sharing emotion with other people.

Now for the question you’ve all been waiting for: why am I writing this blog? Well partly because I have to in order to pass my class, but also in part because I am really passionate about this subject. I honestly care about educating people who want to go into advertising. It is a quirky field where the only limitations are those you put on yourself. I, myself, have much to learn but hopefully in sharing what I know, I will continue to expand my knowledge base. The sky is the limit for new ads, and I hope to fully join this sky-high discourse.

In simple terms: read on to explore my love for advertising and find out how people get you to buy stuff on a daily basis.
